Dear Father,

I now seat myself to pen you a few lines to let you know that I am well and in this place guarding prisoners. There is about 400 of them here now and there was 4000 went for the North yesterday. We are driving the Rebels. General Thomas got into Lynchburg before Lee did so the report is that the place is ours and so is Petersburg and Richmond too.

I am enjoying myself as same as ever and hope this will find you all in the same as it leaves me. Write soon.

From your son,

Ansil J. Bartlett
